Water media artist Cheryl Kellar sees the world around her through the magical lens of fashion. “Art in Fashion” is an exploration of fashion in the daily lives of New Yorkers and Northwest Arkansans alike. Kellar was curious as to whether there would be a noticeable difference in this personal expression between New York, the recognized fashion capital of the United States, and that in Fayetteville and Northwest Arkansas. Clearly, art is always in fashion. Geographic influences exist, but it is obvious fashionistas are everywhere!

As we near the end of another year, the Art Ventures family is grateful for the extraordinary group of artists we’ve had the privilege to work with over this last year. Art for the Holidays represents an opportunity for our community to catch a glimpse of the breadth of talent in visual arts that artists in our region have to offer. The Mind’s Eye combines the work of six artists who each have a unique aesthetic approach to representing the world around them. With each composition the artist gives us a peek inside the world that they perceive. Our own perspective can be altered as we see as someone else has seen. This exhibition invites us to notice, to imagine, to look with fresh eyes as we seek out the beauty in both the everyday and the fantastic.

Art Ventures is excited to announce our upcoming K-12 Gallery Initiative exhibit, in collaboration with Don Tyson School of Innovation, which will be open to the public on October 7th. This is the third Youth Initiative exhibit at Art Ventures and will feature ceramic works made by students.

The theme of the exhibit is Change and Adaptability. As the world faces climate change, we’ve come to understand that curiosity and creativity are at the heart of finding workable solutions. Students were invited to explore potential solutions through the creation of ceramics.

September 16 - December 30, 2021

Cabeza y Corazón is an exhibition of works by Andrea Carrillo, a young artist who has an open pathway between her head and her heart. Carrillo’s brushwork and marks land on the surface where they belong, infusing the pieces with character and personality. These works are just a glimpse into her portfolio which also includes graphic design and digital media. Andrea is putting the pieces of the puzzle together that will take her confidently to establishing theory to her practice, deciding what learned rules should be broken and which new ones she will create. Cabeza y Corazón is a presentation to the NWA region that we have another emerging artist to celebrate.

September 2 – October 31, 2021

Inside Oluwatobi Adewumi’s cultural milieu the male artist bestows ultimate respect to womanhood by depicting her power to create, nurture, protect, and reflect Black life in the diaspora

The Seven Cherokee Clan Masks (ᎦᎵᏉᎩ ᏣᎳᎩ ᏧᏂᏴᏫ ᏗᎵᎬᏚᎶ) is an exhibition at the Fayetteville Public Library where we can use library resources to learn about culture and view it through the eyes of a Cherokee artist. Jeff Edwards’ creative journey for the Seven Cherokee Clan Masks required study and numerous discussions throughout his community to bring these representations to life. Especially since the focus on the Cherokee and other Indigenous people was to destroy culture, extra effort must be made to learn the ways that bring authenticity to the Cherokee Clan history. Jeff has been a part of the centering of the Cherokee Syllabary for over a decade and includes text in most of his visual designs including in these works.

July 1 - September 30, 2021

True Colors is a solo exhibition featuring Amy Eichler who, like the Fauvists, uses bold, saturated color and expressive brushwork in painting. The six portraits in the exhibition reflect her parallel work in dance performance and teaching choreography. Her application of paint to canvas mirrors the body’s choreographed movements and color further infuses character. Eichler says, “It’s my love of training in dance that has influenced my painting to emphasize expressive color, rhythm, technique, character and the living form.  I approach my paintings like a dance routine, performing my art from start to finish with one burst of energy.”

July 1 - October 3, 2021

Earth Elements is represented by four women artists who explore their relationship to life with an appreciation of the earth. Every representation of their relationship with it is based upon the fact of its elemental beauty. Sleek, dreamlike representation of available paths through water or roads, minute hard edges come together to describe soft curves, landscape juxtaposed with human biology, wild beauty of nature powerfully absorbs human-made interruptions to Earth Elements. One artist brings us to see through her own child's eye view of abandon what most of us cannot retrieve.

July 1 - Aug 31, 2021

“Some Things Sacred” is a solo exhibition by Bobby Martin.

Meet Bobby at the opening reception on First Thursday, July 1 beginning at 5pm at the Gallery (20 S Hill Avenue). Free shuttle picks up at the Fayetteville Square and at the Center St Church Ave bus stop.

Martin’s work includes imagery of spiritual icons in his life, “grannies and aunties,” who monitored and practiced care for his spiritual well-being and now allow him to do the same for his own family. The work shares this cultural truth of contemporary life among Native peoples that is often overlooked or misunderstood.

May 5 - June 30, 2021

Happiness, Wisdom, and Beauty is a lifelong mantra for Karolyn Farrell’s art practice that has been a constant and consistent part of her daily life. Her practice inhabits a continuum that is not predicated upon life’s challenges – she deems those challenges inevitable. Finding happiness, wisdom, and beauty is the real work and to overcome challenges, Karolyn centers her own life enough to share moments of joy through her art.

Artists translate and reflect culture and do so in individual ways that describe whether it is in stasis or change. How do we align as humans responding to natural and man-made impacts upon culture? This exhibition offers you the opportunity to find your reflection in artists as they translate and respond to life in our times.
