Mending the Pieces With Gold

April 5 - May 29, 2022

We are the sum of our experiences–both good and bad. The difficult ordeals of life may leave us feeling shattered in their wake, but through time spent healing and repairing these broken pieces we may shape our characters into a beautiful new whole. The Japanese art of kintsugi honors the process of repair as a worthy practice, and celebrates the history of broken pottery by repairing it with lacquer mixed with gold or silver. In this way, the act of mending is illuminated and honored. Similarly, these artworks represent how we may emerge from life’s hardships with grace; mending our own broken pieces in a way that celebrates what we have survived and overcome. Through both abstract and representational works, Denise Sagan highlights the powerful resilience of her subjects.
