Facial expressions are a critical aspect of human communication. Through the fine facial muscles we communicate ideas and emotions to others around us. But what lies behind the expressions of joy, sadness, hope, or fear?
Drew Gentle’s work examines the tension between our external appearance and our internal reality caught in a moment of time. These portraits feature expressionistic portrayals of individuals in their everyday lives. The eyes echo down the face, the corners of the mouths move both up and down, the fine lines of the forehead and eyes expand with curious energy. Through capturing both the exterior and interior experience of the individual, Drew Gentle draws our attention to the hidden expressions of the mind and heart, which we may catch glimpses of in the faces of our loved ones.
