In an act meant to reconstruct lost stories and challenge harmful stereotypes, Arkansas based artist Oluwatobi Adewumi creates portraiture of Black African immigrants across the diaspora. Using collage to reference stories of strength and heroism, the artist highlights what is often lost or taken away from each individual. This work simultaneously explores Adewumi’s personal journey of moving to America from Nigeria, and the loss and pain felt by assimilation and marginalization. Artwork courtesy of Art Ventures.
