About Joseph Poulose

Biography

Poulose Kollamparambil Joseph began his career as a social worker, teaching art in remote villages in Tamil Nadu, India. He was a first-generation college graduate whose 'Malayalee' parents settled in the Blue Mountains of southern India (The Nilgiris). As the second youngest among seven siblings, he had a unique personality from a very young age, excelling in both academics and artistic abilities. His talent was recognized by the local Catholic church, which sponsored his high school and college education. Despite his humble origins, he designed emblems for various institutions while still in high school. He graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts (a 5-year practical training program) from Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai, India.

Poulose taught high schoolers in India and the Republic of Maldives for nearly three decades, coaching his students for the prestigious Cambridge University examinations. Many of his students' entries were recognized and appreciated in the UK. The Ministry of Education of the Republic of Maldives has recognized Poulose for his services, and the Ministry of External Affairs of India has also recognized him for being the best art coordinator in Maldives.

Despite the digital revolution in every art form, Poulose believes in the personal touch that matters in creating art and imparting art education. Each student should be inspired and encouraged to be a camera that captures their imagination onto a medium in the most fitting way; this is the responsibility of a good artist and art teacher.

Statement

I have explored various forms of visual art, including watercolor, portraiture, caricatures, and print media illustrations. As a multifaceted visual artist and illustrator, teaching art has been the most satisfying experience for me. Despite the prevalence of digital media in every art form, I believe that the personal touch is what matters in creating art and imparting art education. Each student should be inspired and encouraged to be a camera that captures their imagination onto a medium in the most fitting way; this is the responsibility of a good artist and art teacher.
