About Elise Lunsford
Elise Lunsford is not only an art therapist and practicing fine artist but also a passionate advocate for mental health and the LGBTQ+ community. Nestled in the scenic landscape of Northwest Arkansas, she considers herself immensely privileged to have art integrated into her profession, allowing her to combine her two greatest passions. From a young age, Elise formed a profound bond with art, and it has since remained an unwavering presence throughout her academic journey and into adulthood. Art, for her, serves as a deeply personal and transformative outlet for self-expression and healing. This powerful connection ultimately inspired her to pursue a fulfilling career in art therapy and counseling.
At the clinic where Elise dedicates her expertise, a haven of safety and support is provided to the community. The clinic not only offers counseling services but also addresses the mental health needs of underserved individuals in the queer community. As a proud member of the queer community herself, Elise recognizes the privileges she possesses by being married to a man, even though her identity may not be immediately apparent. Consequently, she often encounters varying treatment and is sometimes perceived as heterosexual. Sadly, Elise is all too familiar with the discrimination, hate, and fear that are directed towards the LGBTQ+ community. She has personally witnessed the prejudiced assumptions and harmful stereotypes imposed upon queer women. These assumptions encompass a wide range of topics, from societal expectations of body image and femininity, especially prevalent in the Southern region, to biased opinions about their interests, love, and relationships.
Despite the challenges she faces, Elise remains committed to dismantling these harmful preconceptions and creating a more inclusive and understanding society. Through her work as an art therapist and her role within the LGBTQ+ community, she strives to challenge biases, promote acceptance, and foster healing for those in need. Elise's unwavering dedication serves as a beacon of hope for both her clients and the community she passionately supports.
In my display, you will find a collection titled "Female Forms" comprising three portraits that celebrate and embody women, encompassing our bodies, our sexuality, our power, and our identities. These artworks challenge conventional notions of womanhood, queerness, and the stereotypes associated with being a strong and beautiful woman in contemporary society.
The first piece, titled "Aly," presents a raw depiction of the female body after childbirth and breastfeeding. It explores the inherent power we possess to create life while rejecting the objectification of women's bodies for sexual purposes.
The second artwork, "In Her Shoes," takes a playful approach to femininity, emphasizing creative self-expression through color, fashion, and style. It highlights the multifaceted nature of a woman's identity and the power she derives from it.
Finally, "Self-Portrait" offers an unfiltered glimpse into my own being, free from makeup, armor, distractions, or masks. This intimate portrayal allows viewers to witness the raw essence of my true self. Within these portraits, one can perceive the various influences and inspirations that have shaped my identity and propelled me on my journey to becoming an art therapist and artist.
Throughout my life, I have been nurtured and inspired by a network of supportive individuals, including friends, family, and local artists. Influential figures such as Robert Ross, my father, and my aunt have played significant roles in shaping my path. Each experience and connection has served as a vital building block in my personal and artistic development, guiding me to the position I occupy today.
