About Jeffry Cantu
Represented Artist
Jeffry Cantu studied at University of Arkansas in Fort Smith, AR. He is a United States Navy Veteran who was stationed in Japan and traveled throughout Asia and the Pacific in 2000-2004. He was also in the USN Reserves in Little Rock, AR. Cantu has been influenced by his Mexican culture and Asia. He met his husband back in 2012 and gradually his ambitions have become reality. While in college he volunteered as a scenic artist for the UAFS Theater production "Mist and Shadows". Cantu specializes in three-dimensional design and mixed media abstract works but creates artworks in a variety of mediums in all scale ranges. In 2018, Cantu was nominated by CAE to showcase in artworks at the Van Buren adult Education Center. He was featured in ARTalk Magazine and Times Record Newspaper in 2019. He won second place at the Annual Invitational 2019 and was featured in the artist in the 2021 Invitational for the Fort Smith Regional Art Museum. Cantu was an artist for the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art COVID Relief program in 2020 in collaboration with Fayetteville Housing Authority. In the winter of 2022 Cantu was chosen for CACHE’s fence weave installation, “Colors Through Motion”, and in spring of 2022 Cantu was commissioned through Arts One Presents to create a corn husk art installation located in Black Apple Hard Cider in Springdale, AR.
My sculpture addresses the use of repetition, movement, form, unity, with variety, organic shapes and abstraction using corn husk, transforming it into a new, different object. From a technical standpoint, this piece is created by hand-manipulating cornhusk to stretch the expressive capabilities combined with other “non-traditional” sculptural materials: bamboo, twine, rope, and clay to create this installation. It is an expression of my contemporary, cultural search-of-self, using materials that are mainstays of my ancestry.
