June Exhibition // Neighbors & Neighborhood: Beav-O-Rama Park and Islamic Art in Context

June 6th, 2019 – June 30th, 2019

@AV Gallery

Join us for the premier exhibition of Neighbors & Neighborhoods: Beav-O-Rama Park by artist Eloa Jane Pereira who received a Mid-America Arts Alliance (M-AAA) Artistic Innovations Grant. Eloa Jane is one of seventeen artists selected by a panel of artists and arts professionals from across the six-state region, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas to receive this grant made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts. Her exhibition is a series of “…twelve works that depict life in Beav-O-Rama Park in the outskirts of Fayetteville, AR. An unincorporated rural community, the modest site is located on the banks of the White River and at its entrance a sign reads ‘Home of Friendly Neighbors’.” Neighbors & Neighborhoods runs through July 28th, 2019 with a special program at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art July 19-21.

Islamic Art in Context is a groundbreaking regional exhibition launched by Art Ventures at Faulkner Performing Arts Center at the University of Arkansas campus in April of this year. Participating artists are from around the world and use cultural iconography, technique, and outlook to describe the confluence of ancient traditions and mores within a constantly changing and volatile present as lived in a new homeland. The June exhibition includes many new works not included in the previous show.

This exhibition is made possible by the Walmart Foundation.

Eloa Jane

Eloa Jane’s lifetime of transience that began as a girl in Brazil ended in 2014 when she discovered neighbors and neighborhood at Beav-O-Rama Park. She says, “The idyllic nature of the neighborhood and the inclusiveness with which my neighbors welcomed me were an inspiration to want to tell the story of this unassuming place.”
I transform recycled paper waste into art. In this process I maintain the integrity of paper’s textures and printings. I roll pages of recycled paper individually into small tubes and assemble them to create. I see my own journey in the disconnected words, fading colors and rough textures of the pieces I make. They reflect my life’s transformation after I have seen it torn apart like a piece of paper and yet I hold to my values and redefine myself…

Islamic Art in Context

Art Ventures took the “Town” in the form of Islamic Art in Context to “Gown,” the University of Arkansas’ Fayetteville campus. June presents this opportunity for the community, our “town,” to experience the richness of our cultural micro-communities, the variety of cultural understandings that make our country great.

We showcase the work of Behnaz Sohrabian, Moh’d Bilbeisi, Maryamsadat Amirvaghefi, D’zart, the Texas Muslim Artists Collective featuring Saima Khan, Najmus Saqib Hassan, Kaneez Zohra Saddiqi, Arif Imam and Tasleem Mirza.

See paintings, graphic design, calligraphy and photography of diasporic contemporary art in the context of North American experiences.
