Some Things Sacred

July 1 - Aug 31, 2021

“Some Things Sacred” is a solo exhibition by Bobby Martin.

Meet Bobby at the opening reception on First Thursday, July 1 beginning at 5pm at the Gallery (20 S Hill Avenue). Free shuttle picks up at the Fayetteville Square and at the Center St Church Ave bus stop.

In keeping with the Art Ventures vision to promote inclusive communities characterized by mutual understanding and respect and communication across cultures through art, Some Things Sacred is a conversation by a Muscogee (Creek) artist with his culture and history coupled in Christianity. We are invited to this important conversation to learn how the artist’s personal Christian religious experience “goes beyond cultural boundaries and tradition.” He discusses the tension between traditional native practices and Christianity which has been adopted in Native communities. He says, while there is no denying that many horrific trials were inflicted on my ancestors in the name of Christ, that to me has no relation to the true and very real teachings of Christianity.

Martin’s work includes imagery of spiritual icons in his life, “grannies and aunties,” who monitored and practiced care for his spiritual well-being and now allow him to do the same for his own family. The work shares this cultural truth of contemporary life among Native peoples that is often overlooked or misunderstood.
